TTC Votes To Proceed With Controversial New Exits

The TTC is moving ahead with planned installation of new fire safety exits at the Greenwood and Donlands subway stations, despite objections from neighbouring residents whose homes could be demolished in the process.

On Wednesday, TTC staff voted to proceed with the construction, which residents argued will partially expropriate about 10 homes near Donlands station.

Residents in that area called for a deferral in the vote, saying another month was needed for analysis. That motion was defeated.

At the Greenwood station, Gus Vagenas’s home could be demolished in order to make room for the second exit.

“I feel like a second class citizen of this city,” he said. TTC officials initially thought his home, which is under construction, was abandoned.

Vagenas says he only recently found out about the plan, and wasn’t invited to participate in the public meeting. The TTC has come under fire for their community consultation.

TTC staff will now have to ask city council for permission to expropriate. A decision on that will be made next month.
