Two Crashes Snarl Traffic On 401

A 37-year-old Whitby man is in hospital with serious injuries after he crashed into a truck in one of two multi-vehicle collisions on Friday.
At about 9am, the man was driving his Chrysler Sebring convertible eastbound on Highway 401 approaching Morningside Avenue, when he hit the back of a truck cab. The Sebring rolled onto its roof and slid more than 100 metres into a concrete guardrail, casting metal debris at a third car, a Buick SUV.
Emergency crews transported the man to Sunnybrook hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The other two drivers were not hurt.
Police shut down the eastbound express lanes for about three hours for the investigation. They have not laid any charges, but believe speed may have caused the crash.
And the express lanes of the 401 westbound near the Don Mills overpass have reopened after a 12-car collision halted traffic for about an hour Friday morning.
A jackknifed tractor-trailer reportedly started the chain of events around 10:30am and several minor injuries were reported.
