Semrau found not guilty of Second Degree Murder

OTTAWA, Ont. – A military panel has found a Canadian Forces Captain not guilty of Second Degree Murder, after being accused of firing two rounds from his rifle in Afghanistan back in October of 2008.
Instead, Robert Semrau was found guilty of discreditable conduct, after firing at an enemy Taliban fighter while in Helmand Province.
A Second Degree Murder conviction would have been accompanied by a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole for 10 years.
Sources have said that following the shooting, Semrau told fellow officers he simply wanted to put the wounded and dying man out of his misery.
