UAE regulator says BlackBerry services will be blocked for visitors too

It looks like BlackBerry maker Research In Motion isn’t going to readily bow to a looming ban on its email, messaging and web browsing services in the United Arab Emirates.

RIM said today in a statement it’s committed to continue delivering secure devices that satisfy the needs of both customers and governments.

At the heart of the concern is the way the BlackBerry manages data, which is encrypted and routed through the RIM’s servers overseas, where it cannot be monitored for illegal activity.

The ban is scheduled to take effect in the UAE on Oct. 11 and would affect visitors to that country, too.

The BlackBerry maker also says that governments have a wide range of resources to satisfy national security and law enforcement needs without compromising commercial security requirements.

RIM says encryption technology isn’t unique to the BlackBerry and is considered a requirement for all business-class wireless email services.
