Strike averted for Toronto Terminals Railway workers

TORONTO, Ont. – The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union reached a tentative settlement with Toronto Terminals Railway (TTR) ahead of Tuesday’s 12:01 a.m. deadline, averting a possible strike.
TTR maintains Union Station and works alongside railways and transportation companies such as VIA Rail, CN, CP and GO Transit.
It has been around for more than a century – providing construction, operation and maintenance services.
In July, members of the CAW local voted 94 per cent in favour of a strike if talks broke down.
In a press release, CAW national representative Bob Fitzgerald said “this is a deal that our bargaining committee is comfortable bringing to the membership and believe they will accept.”
He went on to say “we are very happy that a deal was reached in time to avert any possible disruption for rail transit commuters.”
In terms of the agreement, Fitzgerald only told 680News “it’s a three year deal and I [can say] without giving too many details […] we’ve got wage increases in all three years and we picked up some new benefits.”
Further information about the deal will be released after it is ratified by union members.
A ratification meeting is expected in the coming days.
