RIM and India reach agreement

TORONTO, Ont. – Research in Motion has agreed to provide India with manual access to the BlackBerry messenger service by September 1, according to Bloomberg News.

September 1 was the date India had promised to pull the plug on BlackBerry services if an agreement wasn’t reached.

Last week, India joined the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in asking RIM for access to codes that would allow government agencies to read messages sent between BlackBerries.

Currently, all data that goes through RIM services prevents governments from seeing it.

RIM will also give Indian government officials automatic access by November.
