Rome and Florence are in a heated battle over who actually owns Michaelangelo’s marble masterpiece, “David.”
The mayor of Florence has defended his city’s ownership of the statue after the culture ministry asserted that the masterpiece belongs to the central government of Rome.
The mayor of Florence said the statue was ceded to the city of Florence by a decree in 1870/1871 when the capital was switched to Rome.
Lawyers that were commissioned by Rome argue that Florence does not own the statue because it has been passed between sovereign states for centuries.
