Ford admits to failing to provide breathalyzer test in Florida over 10 years ago

TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto mayoral candidate and city councillor Rob Ford admitted Thursday he was charged with failing to provide a breathalyzer test during a trip to Florida more than a decade ago.

He held a news conference Thursday in Etobicoke after reports he was charged with marijuana possession at that time. The marijuana charge was later dropped.

“I truly believe this election is not about mistakes I made eleven-and-a-half years ago, by me or by any other candidate that had made mistakes. It’s about today and tomorrow and how our decisions today will shape Toronto in the next 10 years,” Ford told reporters at the news conference.

Ford said he entered a guilty plea for failing to provide a breath sample, paid a fine and did 50 hours of community service, which he served coaching football.

He said he forgot about the marijuana possession charge because on that same night in Florida, he had originally been pulled over for drinking and driving, and charged with failing to provide the breath sample.

Ford also admitted this was one of three times he has been charged by police. He said he was charged with assault for a hockey fight when he was 18-years-old, which was dismissed. He was charged in a domestic incident, which was also dismissed.

Ford said he does not have a criminal record.
