Undertow Causes Two Deaths, One Near-Drowning In Great Lakes

Two people have died and a third is in hospital after they were overcome by waves and undertow in the Great Lakes this week.

A 53-year-old Burlington man was swimming back to Sherkston Shores on Lake Erie with his 15-year-old daughter, when.he disappeared in the choppy waters shortly before 6pm.

The police helicopter and marine unit found the man about an hour later, but could not revive him.

Shortly after 4pm at the same beach, a 17-year-old girl was also overcome by the waves and undertow, but two bystanders pulled her from the water and managed to revive her. She was taken to Welland County General Hospital with water in her lungs, but in stable condition.

And earlier in the day, at about 7am, OPP officers found the body of a 16-year-old from France who had gone missing on Monday while in Lake Huron near Kincardine.

Oksana Milovanovic was swimming in the water at Station Beach early in the afternoon when she was pulled underwater by the strong undertow.

The exchange student went missing, but two others who were with her at the time were rescued.

Police on ATVs found Milovanovic’s body on the beach about one kilometre north of were she was last seen.
