Ford widens lead over Smitherman: poll

TORONTO, Ont. – After a week of being rocked by controversy, fresh polling suggests Rob Ford is enjoying a comfortable lead in the race for mayor of Toronto.

A new Ipsos Reid survey has put Ford 11 points ahead of his nearest competitor George Smitherman.

Ford currently sits at 32 per cent of public support with Smitherman at 21 per cent.

Sarah Thomson has moved into third place with 10 per cent, followed by Joe Pantalone at nine per cent. Rocco Rossi is at seven per cent.

The latest news from the Rossi camp is that political campaign veteran Bernie Morton has been brought on board for the final sprint.

The other noteworthy element of the recent poll is that although Mayor David Miller is not running for a third term, the pollster included his name in the recent set of questions and found that he would be the frontrunner if he was in the race.
