Council makes Rob Ford repay donations collected

TORONTO, Ont. – Mayoral frontrunner Rob Ford must repay thousands of dollars in donations he collected improperly for his football charity.

On Wednesday morning, city council quietly approved the recommendation from the city’s integrity commissioner, Janet Leiper, during a meeting.

After a four month investigation, Leiper found the Etobicoke councillor broke city rules when he used office letterhead to seek funds for the Rob Ford Football Foundation.

She called it an “improper use of influence,” and ruled Ford should pay the lobbyists and corporate donors back.

City records show Ford raised a total of more than $37,000 – less than half of that, however, was affected by Wednesday’s ruling.

Councillors approved the report without opening the issue for debate.
