Two months until Toronto municipal election

TORONTO, Ont. – It’s the last city council meeting Wednesday before Torontonians head to the polls on October 25.

And there is a long list of items to get through, including a motion requesting police checks for elected officials.

This will also be David Miller’s last council meeting as mayor.

City councillor Howard Moscoe said he’s going to present a motion that all candidates for council be subjected to a criminal background check and that the results be posted on the city’s website.

Moscoe said it has nothing to do with Rob Ford’s situation, but just thinks it’s a good idea.

City council is also going to give the thumbs up or thumbs down to that $88-million hockey arena on the Portlands. Council will also decide whether or not to keep the city’s ski hills open this winter, until a private buyer can be found.

The bigger buzz at council could be about how to convince Miller to reconsider his plan not to run again.

Miller was positioned as the frontrunner in the recent Ipsos Reid poll that was commissioned by the National Post.
