Fines could increase for those caught littering cigarette butts

TORONTO, Ont. – Smokers who litter their cigarette butts could soon be facing higher fines.

A Liberal MPP has introduced a private member’s bill that would double the minimum fine from 1,000 to $2,000.

If the bill becomes law, the maximum fine could reach $3,000.

The littering problem has become worse as Toronto’s 2006 smoking ban pushed smokers outside.
