TORONTO, Ont. – Mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi is talking bridge repairs while one of his main rivals is ripping apart his tunnel vision for Toronto.
Rossi has vowed to bring in state-of-the-art rapid bridge replacement technology to speed up construction and minimize traffic snarls.
He outlined his plan Wednesday while standing in front of the deconstructed Jameson Avenue bridge.
“I will take advantage of new technology to get the job done faster and with less disruption. I’m talking about state-of-the-art rapid bridge replacement technology that’s already in use across Ontario and around the world,” Rossi told reporters.
Earlier this week, Rossi proposed building a tunnel linking the Allen Expressway to the Gardiner Expressway.
At a debate Tuesday night, he also said he supports building a vehicle bridge or pedestrian tunnel to the Island Airport.
Meantime, mayoral hopeful George Smitherman was quick to slam Rossi’s transportation platform, referring to it as an April Fools Day joke.
“How for goodness sake does Mr. Rossi propose to pay for the underground version of the Spadina expressway,” Smitherman asked.
Smitherman said he’ll hand out thousands of flyers along the route of the proposed tunnel, letting people know about the risk involving ventilation shafts and ramp congestion.
He also said we need to focus on an integrated transit plan and added he would be critiquing Rob Ford’s transportation plan on Thursday.
