Rain fell all night, but today, Pink LemonAid is all that’s being poured.
Plan Canada’s Because I Am A Girl (BIAAG) campaign kicked off their Pink LemonAid stands to raise awareness and money for women in Third World countries.
Two Pink LemonAid stands have already closed, but one more is open from 4-6 p.m Wednesday. at the MuchMusic HQ Parking Lot. You can grab a glass for only $2.00. All proceeds go to BIAAG.
Paula Roberts, executive vice-president for marketing and development at Plan Canada, said the stands are an easy way to help change the situation for girls. “Pink LemonAid is to give people an easy, accessible way to become part of the BIAAG movement, and when they do, they have a chance to change the world too.”
This is the first Pink LemonAid stand day ever run by BIAAG, but Roberts hopes this will happen again, and in cities other than just Toronto.
CityNews.ca was at the 12-2 p.m. stand at Yorkville Park, where Canadian celebrity supporters Rod Black, Erin Davis, Martine Gaillard and Peggy Kotsopolous handed out the refreshing drink.
“It’s women who are making change in the world. While men make the wars, women will make the peace, the homes and the change,” Erin Davis, radio host for CHFI, said.
Davis and her husband have four foster children through Plan Canada, and stressed how different life is for those who are not in Canada. “People don’t realize when you’re born in Canada, not only do you win the birth lottery by being born here geographically, but being born a female, isn’t an automatic strike against you in life. In so many countries around the world, immediately you are the underdog.”
Sportsnet’s Martine Gaillard said that women really do affect change. “If you give women opportunities, they’re organized, they’re hard working. They’re the ones that make change; they’re the ones that can do positive things around the world.”
At the stands, Plan Canada has their petition for declaring Sept 22 the National Day of the Girl.
