British-Canadian Actress Jackie Burroughs Dead At 71

Jackie Burroughs, probably best known to Canadians as an inhabitant of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Avonlea, has passed away. She was 71.
The British-born actress played a rather uptight character, Hetty King, on Road to Avonlea and Amelia Evans in Anne of Green Gables, but was a free spirit in real life. Shirley Douglas has described her as a volcano to work with.
Burroughs had been battling stomach cancer and died at her Toronto home surrounded by family and friends Wednesday. Her funeral will be held next week at St. James Cathedral.
She enjoyed success both on screen and stage – she won several Genies, Geminis and was honoured with the Governor General’s Award for performing arts in 2005. The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television gave her the Earle Grey lifetime achievement award. She also performed at the Stratford and Shaw festivals and on stages in Toronto.
Burroughs is survived by her daughter, Zoe Yanovsky, and two grandchildren.
