Blackberry unveils the Playbook, the next tablet computer

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Research in Motion has confirmed that they are releasing a tablet computer called the Blackberry Playbook, which is similar to the iPad.

RIM appears to be targeting the device at business and consumer markets. Taking a jab at its competitor, Apple, it said the computer is a “multi-tasking, flash-loving device”, which offers uncompromised browsing.

The Playbook will have a seven inch screen, which is half the size of its Apple equivalent, and it will contain two cameras – one rear facing and another front facing – which shoot in high definition.

It can also output video to a projector or large screen.

Jim Balsillie made the announcement at a developers conference in San Francisco Monday afternoon.

He added that the device will be sold through carriers and retailers.

Other companies are working towards building similar models.

There is no word on a price for the Playbook or when it will be launched.
