Latest Poll Shows Ford’s Lead Slipping

Rob Ford’s lead in the mayoral race looked a lot less intimidating to his detractors on Monday night after an Ipsos-Reid poll revealed that his main rival, George Smitherman, is surging forward.

The poll has Ford with 28 percent of decided voters, with Smitherman closing the gap at 23.

The latest numbers didn’t faze Ford.

“I’m not worried about anyone else’s campaign,” he told CityNews.  “I know I’m running an excellent campaign, things are going really well and I have a fantastic team and we’re just going to keep going hard right down to election day.”

Smitherman, on the other hand, seems to sense a changing of the tide.

“We’re feeling a good sense of momentum, really in the last 10 days.  A lot of people have been coming on board and helping and volunteering and making phone calls and knocking on doors.”

John Wright of Ipsos-Reid says this is essentially now a slugfest between Ford and Smitherman.

And if it were in fact a two-person race, the latest polls show Smitherman would have a slight lead at 48-45.
