TORONTO, Ont. – Facebook announced earlier this week that it’s making some major changes to its website, but just how good are the changes for the average user?
The changes primarily affect privacy, among other things. In an official blog post, Facebook said these changes are aimed at giving its users “more control,” and part of that control is the ability to invite people into private groups so only they can see your updates and posts.
CNN and CBS tech expert Katie Linendoll told 680News this is good for users.
“A lot of us have like a thousand friends and how many of those people are you really friends with?” Linendoll said.
“Now, you have the ability to create groups, so say for example my fantasy football team, if we want to start a group, then I would only post status updates to that group, only post photos to that group, which I think is a really good thing,” she added.
But, Linendoll said not all those changes are for the better. She said parents need to beware since this could create a problem for some of the site’s younger users.
“You can just see a group of high school teenage girls starting a group, they make it a secret group, you can only get in with a password, and somebody gets left out. It’s going to hurt feelings,” the tech expert said.
And getting the right name for the private group may prove to be a challenge as well.
“There’s only one unique ID, so say for example I wanted to create a gadgets group, I’m the only one that can have the word gadget,” Linendoll explained.
Some of the other changes include the ability to download and keeping all the things a user has ever posted on the site, including status updates, pictures and comments.
