BlackBerry users in United Arab Emirates thankful for service on Monday

TORONTO, Ont. – As we sit down this Monday and give thanks for what we have in our lives, BlackBerry owners in the United Arab Emirates are also giving thanks that email, messaging and web services – originally scheduled to be cut off on Monday – will remain in place.

On Friday, the conservative Muslim country decided to reverse the decision to cut service.

The announcement, which ended more than two months of uncertainty, sent people flocking to stores to purchase the Smartphone in great quantities. As a result, most dealers in the country reported their outlets out of stock.

Experts speculated that the country pulled the ban because it could have hurt its business-friendly reputation.

Meanwhile, online news service Emirates 24/7 said a statement sent to them from Research in Motion said the deal was made possible after the BlackBerry maker took the U.A.E.’s security needs into account.

An estimated 500,000 people subscribe to the service in the country, which is second only to Saudi Arabia in the region.
