Pantalone, Smitherman Get Top Grades From Toronto Environmental Alliance

Two mayoral candidates received a failing grade from the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA).
TEA handed Rob Ford and Rocco Rossi an “F” because they didn’t fill out its 20-question survey. Joe Pantalone and George Smitherman received top grades.
Both Ford and Rossi declined to take part in the exercise because they said the questions weren’t in line with the views of most Torontonians. The questions were based on TEA’s top six priorities, which include building on the Transit City plan; achieving 70 per cent waste diversion by 2011; buying and supporting locally-produced green products; building transportation infrastructure everyone can use; implementing the city’s sustainable energy strategy and providing tools to prevent pollution.

Pantalone received an A+. TEA said the candidate shows the greatest commitment to environmental issues. Pantalone has pledged to move forward with Transit City, expanding access to locally-grown food and increasing waste diversion.
Smitherman also received an A+ for his plans for the city, including getting green bins into apartment buildings, creating local green jobs and reducing toxic pollution. He lost points, however, for his stance on incinerating garbage (he’d consider it) and for not pledging to fully implement the city’s bike plan.
