Could John Tory be on Rob Ford’s payroll?

TORONTO, Ont. – John Tory may not have run for mayor of Toronto, but he may be working at City Hall sometime soon.

On Friday, Nick Kouvalis, the incoming chief of staff for mayor-elect Rob Ford, said that Tory has offered to play a role in the administration of the new mayor.

However, the role the former Progressive Conservative party leader would take is not known at this time.

“John’s come and said he wants to help, in almost any capacity,” Kouvalis told reporters. “I’ve talked to mayor-elect Ford. He’s ecstatic and there will probably be something in the next couple weeks on that.”

Tory was not immediately reached for comment.

Kouvalis originally mentioned Tory joining the team during a discussion about the mayoral race with members of all four big campaign teams, hosted by the Public Affairs Association of Canada.

During the meeting, Kouvalis revealed results, showing that the Ford campaign’s internal polling had Tory doing much better than Ford and George Smitherman, had he chosen to enter the race.

Kouvalis chronicled how the campaign worked to keep Tory out of the race with certain tactics, such as a YouTube video showing Tory as a superhero sidekick unable to stop Ford’s “gravy train” to city hall, and having a campaign worker call into Tory’s show questioning his integrity because of his announcement that he wasn’t going to enter the race, back in January.
