Well-known anti-globalization activist Jaggi Singh is planning to challenge the bail conditions imposed on him following his arrest in the lead-up to the G20 summit in Toronto, which prohibit him from taking part in demonstrations. He claims his freedom of expression is being squelched.
Singh and his lawyer Peter Rosenthal, with the support of PEN Canada, will make their case in the Ontario Superior Court on University Avenue Wednesday.
After posting $85,000 bail, Singh must abide by a number of conditions including not participating in a public demonstration, he can’t use wireless devices, he’s not allowed to hold a passport and he’s prohibited from having contact with his co-accused.
Fellow G20 activist Alex Hundert was jailed after he breached his bail conditions by participating in a panel discussion at Ryerson University in September. He’s still behind bars.
“Preventing someone from participating in a public demonstration does nothing to ensure the safety of a single Canadian,” PEN Canada said in a statement.
“On the contrary, the practice of censorship harms the rights of all Canadians and is repugnant to any society that values its right to freedom of expression.”
