Poll: British Columbians support HST referendum

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – British Columbians support a referendum on the HST but still find it confusing.

A Harris-Decima poll found 67 per cent of those polled support next year’s vote on the controversial new tax. But 63 per cent are not happy with the information provided about the tax.

John Les, parliament’s secretary for the HST, says five months in, attitudes are changing.

“People are starting to understand that where they once anticipated a negative impact, it hasn’t happened. In many cases, they are starting to see the benefits of implementation of the HST,” Les believes.

Les says his job is to get information out, adding he won’t be distracted by Liberal leadership candidates who want to bump up the September 24 referendum date. Expect a more user-friendly provincial website on the issue, and financial experts to offer their opinions.
