Makers of Skype, audio-video chat software, say millions of users online again

The makers of Skype, the popular Internet-based audio and video chat software, say millions of users are reporting they can connect again.

The service with about 560 million users went down on Wednesday, triggering fears that it might be unavailable during the holidays.

In a blog post on Thursday morning, Skype said as many as five million users were back online, which is about a third of the normal traffic expected on a typical morning.

A little later, the company then said 10 million users had been able to sign in.

But the company said it could not predict exactly when users who are still disconnected would be able to get back online.

Skype’s software offers a range of free services, including the ability to make voice or video calls and send instant messages to other Skype users. Users pay for services such as making calls from a PC to a landline or cellphone.
