NEW YORK, N.Y. – New York City’s mayor has expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the city’s emergency response systems performed during the blizzard earlier this week.
However, Michael Bloomberg is also laying some of the blame on residents who did not pay attention to repeated warnings to stay off the streets. Many had to abandon their cars after getting stuck.
Bloomberg said a number of residents also called 911 for non-serious problems. Emergency operators fielded nearly 50,000 calls on Monday – the day after the storm – and 38,000 calls on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, some residents are fuming about streets which remain unplowed days following the blizzard.
“Out of all blizzards I’ve experienced in Brooklyn all my life, this one is like sanitation didn’t even bother to do anything, and they just forgot about us,” said resident Elias Karatzalis, who along with his wife couldn’t find any milk at a Brooklyn deli.
Stores have run out of milk, eggs and other staples because delivery trucks have not been able to navigate snow-covered streets.
