Air Quality Improving According To Provincial Report

Breathing a little easier lately? The province claims the replacement of coal-fired plants and the Drive Clean program are responsible.

On Friday the provincial government released a report based on air quality index readings from 40 monitoring sites that suggests our air is getting cleaner.

There were only three smog advisories in 2009, according to the Air Quality Report released the same year, which is the lowest number of warnings since the program began in 2002.

The air quality report says air pollutants have decreased significantly since 2000. Nitrogen dioxide levels are down 40 per cent; carbon monoxide down 64 per cent and sulphur dioxide levels are down 54 per cent.

Fine particulate matter concentrations have also been on the decline since 2003, the report also said.
