Target faces potential trademark dispute in Canada

TORONTO, Ont. – When U.S. discount retailer Target comes to Canada in two to three years time, they may have to take on a new name.

Another Canadian chain – Fairweather and International Clothiers – have owned the name “Target Apparel” for the past 10 years.

The U.S. retailer already filed a challenge with Canada’s trademark office in July, claiming that the Fairweather owner hasn’t used the Target name.

However, the Canadian company has since opened stores called Target Apparel in Sudbury and Nanaimo, B.C.

The owners of Fairweather have until the end of February to prove it has been using that name.

Approximately 200 stores will be opened in Canada over the next 10 years, according to the U.S. retailer.
