OTTAWA, On. – After weeks of attack advertisements, and campaign-style stump speeches, federal politicians will get back to work, Monday.
The House of Commons will reconvene for the spring session and the upcoming budget will be at the centre of a political showdown, which could send Canadians to the polls sooner rather than later.
Liberal MP for Toronto-Centre Bob Rae said this session will be filled with heated debates.
“We’ll see pretty quickly, over the next two weeks really, whether or not we’re going to have an election in the spring,” he said.
From corporate tax cuts to cash for a Quebec arena, the opposition has laid out demands for the budget; however, the New Democrats are less threatening. That’s why political scientist Claude Denis believes they may be able to strike a deal and avoid a vote.
“We’ve seen this story before, many times, and it almost never happens,” he said.
Industry minister Tony Clement scoffed at an election and said the government will carry on as usual.
“From our perspective, we’re focused on the economy; focused on job creation,” he said.
All the MPs have been gearing up for the session, agreeing anything can happen.
