Man Dies After Being Pulled From Fire

A man has died after being pulled from a residential fire on Thursday night.

Shortly after 9pm, emergency crews arrived at a two-story house on Broadview Avenue, near O’Connor Drive, after neighbours called 911.

Firefighters managed to knock down the fire as paramedics performed CPR on the victim.

He was taken to East General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“He was found just inside his suite and was fairly severely burned,” said Deputy Chief Frank Lamie. “This is another fire situation, another fire death that could have been prevented by residential sprinklers.”

Neighbours helped rescue two more people, who were unharmed.

“There was a lady out front – we heard her screaming,” said witness Mike Dolbaczuk. “We couldn’t understand what she was saying, so I came out. I caught the word ‘fire,’ so we went to the back. I opened the door and got two people out of the house.”

A resident said nine people lived in the building, which had no heat. The victim, believed to be in his 40s, lived on the second floor.
