Six Air Canada workers arrested in connection with benefits scam

TORONTO, Ont. – Peel police arrested six Air Canada employees at Pearson International Airport on fraud-related charges, Thursday.

Six men are facing numerous fraud charges related to an alleged false medical benefits claims scam.

Police told 680News it’s possible more arrests will be made as the investigation continues.

Air Canada apparently got suspicious and called police.

“It looks like they’re all going to be benefit claims made by employees for Air Canada, so they’re all bogus claims that were made,” Peel police Const. George Tudos told 680News.

He said the alleged scam is worth $126,000.

Const. Tudos said investigators are working together with Air Canada, and the airline is doing a parallel internal probe.

Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick confirmed the investigation is underway; however, the airline can’t comment on it because the matter is before the courts.

Thirty-two charges were laid in total. One Brampton man faces 20 charges, the Orangeville suspect faces four charges, while the rest face two counts of fraud.

The following people were arrested:

  • Adrian Weglo, 29, from Brampton
  • Thushanta, Gnanapandithen, 53, from Orangeville
  • Andrew Rahaman, 27, from Brampton
  • Michal Krupski, 20, from Brampton
  • Lyle Campbell, 46, from Brampton
  • Phillip Dutka, 21, from Oakville
