A fire that destroyed an historic Yonge Street building was arson, Toronto Police confirmed on Monday.
“No one has been arrested or charged and the investigation is still ongoing,” Cst. Tony Vella told CityNews.ca.
The six-alarm fire began around 4am on January 3. Eventually, the tower and north wall of the 1888 structure collapsed. The building was located at 335 Yonge. St, at the edge of Ryerson University’s campus and the former home of Thai restaurant Salad King.
A person spotted on surveillance video leaving the scene of the crime is still a “person of interest,” Vella added.
Last year, the façade of Salad King fell onto the street, forcing the restaurant to move.
The building’s owners wanted to tear down the building following the wall collapse in April. The city voted to have it designated a heritage building and was pushing for costly renovations.
