Thumbs Up: Sales Of Smartphones Skyrocket In 2010

The world is getting smarter.

Sales of smartphones, like the iPhone and Blackberry, jumped 87 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to a report out Monday from research firm IDC.

Millions of people all across the globe got hooked on talking, texting and surfing the web on their phone in 2010. Global smartphone shipments reached more than 302 million last year. 

This marks a 74.4-per-cent increase over 2009.

Nokia led the charge, with 28.3 million units sold based mainly on the strength of their Symbian model.

Apple was second, with 16.2 million units sold. They also had 86.2-per-cent growth, and are showing strength in Asia/Pacific and Japan.

Coming in third with 14.6 million units sold and a 14.5 per cent market share is Waterloo Ont’s Research In Motion. The Canadian company’s Blackberry devices were particularly popular in Latin America.

Samsung came in fourth place with 9.7 million units sold, but with a whopping 438.9-per-cent growth.

HTC rounded out the top five with 8.6 million units sold and another impressive 258.6-per-cent growth. Both HTC and Samsung capitalized in 2010 by selling phones operating on the Android operating system.

Analysts predict smartphone sales will go up again in 2011, as retailers focus on reaching the mass market with lower priced products.
