An outbreak of E.coli in the U.S. linked to eating unshelled hazelnuts, also known as filberts, has prompted a recall in Canada.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public against consuming the Sunripe brand of unshelled hazelnuts and mixed nuts containing hazelnuts, imported from the United States.
The agency said Saturday there had been a number of cases in the U.S. associated with the consumption of these products.
It says— in Canada, two cases of E.coli infection have genetic fingerprints that match the U.S. illnesses, but they have not been linked to the recalled products.
The agency says the products have been distributed in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and may have been sold countrywide.
Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps and diarrhea.
The food regulator also announced the recall of the OceanPrime brand of breaded squid rings because of undeclared peanuts in them.
The product has been distributed in Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia.
There has been one reported allergic reaction associated with the consumption of the product.
