Comedian Foley fears jail time if he returns to Canada

Toronto comedian David Foley of Kids in the Hall fame says he will not be bringing his rejuvenated stand-up routine back to Canada in fear he will be arrested for failing to pay child support.

In an interview with the Toronto Star, Foley, 48, is said to owe more than $500,000 dating back to his marriage to Toronto writer, Tabatha Southey.

The marriage ended during Foley’s five-year stint on NBC sitcom NewsRadio.

Foley claims in the article that he has not been able to pay child support because of a lull in his career. He says he hasn’t seen any lucrative work since NewsRadio.

Foley owes $17,301.30 monthly towards his two teenage children. He agreed to pay $10,700 in 2001 – which has risen to $12,301.30 to reflect cost-of-living increases.  Separately, he also owes $5,000 a month towards $589,000 in overdue payments.

That means Foley calculates that he owes $40,000 per month before he can be back in the black.

The possible legal repercussions of returning to this country mean that Foley, who has not performed stand up since his teens, won’t be able to perform for some of his biggest fans: Canadians.
