Controversial Toronto activist Dudley Laws dies at age 76

TORONTO, Ont. – Controversial activist Dudley Laws, who fought for racial equality in Toronto in the 1980’s, died Thursday at the age of 76.

Laws became a vocal critic of the Toronto police force after a number of black men were shot by GTA officers, and founded a group called the Black Action Defence Committee.

“The man I knew was a very regal, very principled person that was actually focused on fairness,” said Toronto city councillor Michael Walker. “It was never about one group being better. It was always about everyone being treated fairly and with the same sense of respect.”

Laws died in hospital, from complications of kidney disease.
