OPP charge Barrie officer with obstructing justice

A Barrie police officer has been charged with various offences after allegedly making up evidence while arresting a suspect at a mall.

The Ontario Provincial Police say the Barrie officer was called to the Bayfield Mall on November 20, 2010. There, he arrested a man for public intoxication and allegedly assaulting the officer.

The OPP arrested the officer after they were asked to look into the matter by the Crown Attorney.

Cst. Jason Nevill has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, obstruct justice and fabricating evidence. Charges against the man arrested at the mall have been dropped.

Nevill, a 12-year veteran of the force, has been suspended from duty.

“I am satisfied that a full and impartial investigation has been conducted and that the public interest has been served,” chief Mark Neelin said. “It would be inappropriate to provide further details on this matter as it is now before the courts.”
