Schwarzenegger & Shriver split

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have called it quits after 25 years of marriage.

The couple issued a joint statement late Monday announcing the separation, four months after Schwarzenegger, 63, ended his second term as California governor. Shriver has posted messages online about her period of transition.

Her father, Peace Corps founder Sargent Shriver, died in January.

“At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship,” the statement said.

“We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment. We ask for compassion and respect from the media and the public.”

The statement doesn’t mention divorce. Nor does it indicate whether Schwarzenegger or Shriver is living in the couple’s canyon estate in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Brentwood. They said they would continue to parent their four children together.

The iron pumping Republican married the journalist and member of the Kennedy dynasty in Cape Cod in the spring of 1986. Shriver is the daughter of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver and left her job as an NBC News correspondent after Schwarzenegger took office. She didn’t want him to pursue political office, but publicly supported her husband’s decision.

Shriver also stood by Schwarzenegger after allegations of him groping women in the past surfaced. He later admitted he “behaved badly sometimes.”

Schwarzenegger recently announced he’s ready to make movies again and has travelled around the world delivering speeches on green energy. Shriver recently guest-edited an edition of Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine.
