P-U in T.O.: Stench wafts over Toronto

Many Torontonians were turning up their noses Wednesday, as a foul smell went wafting over parts of the city.

But it seems that the culprit may be Mother Nature.

The Ministry of the Environment tells CityNews the stink was likely due to the spring thaw.

“The type of smell in Toronto today is an organic type of odour. It’s not uncommon this type of year with the ground getting softer, and leaves decomposing…We did visit many different areas across the city today to make sure there wasn’t a specific or industrial problem, and we didn’t find anything,”  said Kate Jordan, a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Environment.

The city of Toronto called on the ministry to investigate after finding all their operating systems were functioning normally.

But, the foul stench had many in the Twitter community coming up with their own theories. It even inspired a new hashtag — #smellyTO.

@funny_farmer tweeted “Everybody in Toronto stop and look disapprovingly at the person next to you… or blame the closest dog.”

“TO has an upset stomach!” @sterdeus tweeted.

@blogsley tweeted “Toronto is exceptionally smelly today. Keep thinking I have poop on my shoe.”

“It’s definitely a weird day when you feel compelled to run into the city to get a whiff of a terrible, infamous smell,” tweeted @zalina.

The stench was reportedly heaviest late Wednesday morning then dissipated in the early afternoon.
