No charges for police after man dies in security guard chase

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says there are no grounds for charges against Toronto Police after a man died in custody.

Kenrick McLennan, 52, was arrested at a No Frills store on January 23. Employees of the store had chased the man for 300 metres and afterward, McLennan complained of chest pains.

Paramedics were called to the Markham Road and the Lawrence Avenue store and McLennan was taken to Scarborough General Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The SIU says McLennan died of a pre-existing blood condition, exacerbated by the stress of a foot pursuit and his apprehension, and that it happened before police arrived.
