Hamilton-area doctor faces more sexual assault charges

A Hamilton, Ont.,-area doctor accused of sexually assaulting a woman earlier this year is facing fresh charges, after another woman claims he drugged and assaulted her eight years ago.

Dr. Amitabh Chauhan, 33, of Ancaster, was charged with administering a drug for sex and sexual assault on Tuesday.

Police say that in September or October of 2003, Chauhan met a 21-year-old woman in Kingston, Ont. and put an unknown substance in her drink, before sexually assaulting her.

In February, Chauhan was charged alongside Dr. Suganthan Kayilasanathan in the alleged gang sexual assault of a 23-year-old woman in Toronto.

Chauhan faces charges of administering a noxious thing and gang sexual assault in that case.

He is a post-graduate trainee at Hamilton’s McMaster University Hospital in the plastic surgery department.

Chauhan was a member of the Canadian Forces, joining in 1997. He left the military in 2007 but has retained his role as a naval reservist.

Police believe there are other victims and ask anyone with information to contact police at 416-808-7474 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
