New arrest in phone hacking scandal

British police made a new arrest in the ongoing phone hacking scandal, believed to be a former executive at the defunct News of the World tabloid, The Associated Press reported.

The unnamed man was arrested Tuesday morning at a London police station, the wire agency reported.

Police did not identify the 71-year-old man but Sky News, which is 39 per cent owned by News Corp., identified him as former News of the World managing editor Stuart Kuttner.

Kuttner retired after 29 years at the tabloid, 22 of them as managing editor, in 2009.

Police have arrested 10 people. All of them have been released on bail and no one has been charged yet.

Meanwhile, the protestor who threw a pie of shaving foam at News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch when he appeared before Parliament last month has been sentenced to six weeks in jail.

Jonathan May-Bowles pleaded guilty last week to assaulting 80-year-old Murdoch as he testified to the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee on July 19 about the phone hacking scandal.

Murdoch’s wife, Wendi Deng, leapt to defend the media mogul, pushing the protester away.

Bowles was sentenced Tuesday at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London.

Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old tabloid last month amid allegations of illegal phone-hacking by reporters, including the voicemail of 13-year-old murder victim Milly Dowler.
