C. difficile outbreak declared over at Niagara hospital

C. difficile outbreaks at two of three Niagara-area hospitals are officially over.

On Wednesday, the Niagara Health System announced an end to an outbreak at the Greater Niagara General Hospital, which killed four people.

Thirty-three people have died after contracting the C. difficile bacterium at three Niagara hospitals since May.

In early August, the health system declared an outbreak at the Welland hospital over and says it’s working to end the one at St. Catharines General Hospital. Five people with the illness died in Welland; there were 24 in St. Catharines.

The province appointed a supervisor for hospitals in the Niagara region in the wake of the problems.

C. difficile is a bacterium that causes mild to severe diarrhea and intestinal conditions like inflammation of the colon.
