York Region reports first case of West Nile virus

York Region has reported its first case of West Nile virus after lab results of one human case tested positive.

The test results of the individual, from the city of Vaughan, were confirmed Monday.

York Region’s Medical Officer of Health said that although it is late in the season, the risk of exposure to infected mosquitoes is still high and people should still take precautions.

Some precautions include minimizing outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active – such as dusk, night and dawn – as well as applying insect repellent and eliminating any stagnant water on the property.
