TORONTO, Ont. – In a symbolic move against Mayor Rob Ford’s cost-cutting tactics, the Community Development and Recreation Committee has voted to reject the KPMG report.
Councillor Joe Mihevc said the committee’s decision to reject the report is based on residents’ concerns that cutting costs could sacrifice services.
“They’re not happy with the approach that Mayor Ford has taken and they want a different approach and I think today’s committee recommendation reflects that,” Mihevc told 680News.
Mihevc said cutting day care spaces and selling off long term care homes is unacceptable.
He was one of 5 members that voted down the report.
Only the committee’s chair, Councillor Giorgio Mammolitio, did not support the motion.
Mihevc is hoping the decision will influence others to reject the report next week.
“If council sees that it is possible to revolt, it is possible to do the right thing and not have to be bullied by any side of council, that will hopefully give people some courage,” said Mihevc.
KPMG was hired by the city to find cuts to deal with a massive budget fall.
