Carpentier to drive in Montreal Green Rally

MONTREAL — Veteran driver Patrick Carpentier is set to try racing in an environmentally friendly car.
The Joliette, Que., native is to take part in the fifth Rallye International Vert de Montreal, or Montreal Green Rally. He will drive a NAPA Auto Parts Honda CRZ with navigator Yvan Joyal.
“I’m thrilled to compete in an event of this kind, given the new direction the auto industry has been taking,” he said Monday in a statement.
More than 20 cars will be entered, including the Toyota Prius of French world champion Raymond Durand.
Carpentier announced that he would retire from competitive racing after a NASCAR Nationwide series event last month in Montreal, but that clearly did not extend to green cars.
The 600-kilometre rally will be run in stages over three days in and around Montreal from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. The first stage is on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve Formula One track.
The rally is part of the Alternative Energies Cup series sanctioned by motor racing’s world governing body FIA.
