Strubs smoked salmon warning over listeria expanded

A recall for a Strubs brand of smoked salmon sold in Ontario has been expanded with concerns more ready-to-eat smoked salmon products may be contaminated with Listeria and Salmonella Bacteria.

A recall has been issued for Strubs ready-to-eat Danish style smoked grav-lox Atlantic salmon bits (Product code: 09262011), sold in 300-gram vacuum packs. Strubs ready-to-eat Norwegian style Steelhead salmon smoked gold tail (Product code: 09192011) sold in 200-gram vacuum packs and Strubs ready-to-eat deli choice smoked salmon identified by product codes 09192011 and 09262011 are also potentially contaminated.

Although there have been no reported illnesses, Toronto’s medical officer of health, Dr. David McKeown is advising the public to throw it out or return it to the retailer.

The processing plant is in Toronto, but the extent of the distribution across the province is not known.

Last Thursday, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Arlene King issued a warning cautioning the public not to eat Strubs ready-to-eat smoked salmon, sold in 250-gram vacuum packs (Product code: 09192011) because it may be contaminated with Listeria.

Listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious but rare illness. Listeriosis starts as mild flu-like illness but symptoms may start suddenly and include vomiting, nausea, cramps, severe headache, constipation or fever.

Consuming food contaminated with salmonellla can cause a food-borne infection called Salmonellosis, a condition that can be serious to young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include a sudden fever, headache, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and sometimes vomiting.
