VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Occupy Vancouver protesters in front of the Art Gallery say they have heard the mayor’s request they move along, but not face-to-face. The protesters say the mayor is just playing politics.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says his office has been trying to negotiate a peaceful end to the tent city. But Lauren Gill and others say they have received no such request from the city, and even if there eventually is one, they’re not leaving.
“It moves back and forth. I mean, mainstream society is in support of us one day and the next day we do a march and they’re not in support of us. And he’s just kind of towing that party line I think. He wants votes, right? So I’m not surprised that he’s flip-flopping back and forth. He’s just playing off of what other people are saying.”
About 100 people gathered Monday evening to talk about their legal recourse should the city try to intervene. This man says the law is on the side of protesters.
“The eviction of the people occupying this space would be a violation of the Canadian Charter. It would also be a violation of the International Convent on Civil and Political Rights.”
Tents, tarps, signs and people now cover almost every square inch of land in front of the Georgia Street side of the Art Gallery. The group is planning marches for Saturday and Sunday.
