Toronto is the least-liked city in Canada, according to a recent survey – and a few in town seem to agree.
“I understand. We’re a big economic centre and it can be the envy of a lot of places. We do have that attitude,” Torontonian Faiz Siddiqui said.
“I was born and raised in Scarborough and if you get out of Toronto, peoples’ perceptions and attitudes change,” he added.
The survey was conducted by Léger Marketing for the National Capital Commission and the Association of Canadian Studies.
Canadian residents from coast-to-coast were asked how they felt about Toronto and the reaction wasn’t good.
Toronto had the highest rate of “very negative” responses.
Canadians were asked if they had a very positive, somewhat positive, somewhat negative or very negative perception of nine major cities: Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria.
“No opinion” was also a valid answer.
Out of the 2,345 people surveyed, 19 per cent had a “negative” or “very negative” opinion of Toronto.
Ottawa was the most-liked city, with 82 per cent of those polled saying they had a positive or very positive perception of the city. Victoria ranked second with 81 per cent and Vancouver had 80 per cent.
“People in northern Ontario seem to think that Toronto is one of the ‘have’ cities and the rest of the province seems to get neglected. We’re the big, bad, evil city that gets everything,” Toronto resident Melissa Benderite said.
But not everyone in Toronto understood the animosity.
“Oh I disagree. If you’re looking for work it’s the place to be,” said John King, who moved here from northern Ontario.
