Toronto gets first snowfall

Environment Canada has included Toronto and much of the GTA in its special weather statement after snow fell across southern Ontario on Wednesday.

Drivers were advised to slow down as a brief period of heavy flurries fell on the city and across the GTA.

It’s the first snowfall of the season for Toronto.

“We have that first snowfall happening and people aren’t used to having snow on the roads,” traffic reporter Eva Fragiskatos said.

“It started snowing and it’s wet. As we do live in Canada, we have to slow down when we’re driving,” York Regional police Sgt. Tim Kuttschrutter said.

Environment Canada said the snow stretched from Muskoka to the Golden Horsehoe, and then traveled into eastern Ontario.

Toronto as well as the Niagara Region, Halton, Peel, York, Durham, and Hamilton are all under the special weather statement.

“We’re sitting at zero degrees, the freezing mark, in Toronto, but the winds are making it feel much cooler,” weather specialist Stella Acquisto said.

The snow is a big change from a day earlier, when Toronto saw a record rainfall. On Tuesday, 42.2 millimetres of rain was recorded at Pearson airport, exceeding the previous one-day rainfall record of 20.2 millimetres set in 2005.
